Jane Briggs Smith (1834-1925), daughter of Capt. Joshua and Saba (Drew) Smith, was born in Hanson, Mass. During, and for a period after, the Civil War she taught former slaves at freedman's schools in Hilton Head, Port Royal, and Sumter, S.C., and in Washington, D.C. While in the South she met Friend Fuller ("Fuller") Fiske (1828-1906), of Webster, N.H., who was working as a volunteer civilian nurse during the Civil War.
