Papers, 1833-1987?

This collection consists of three folders of miscellaneous papers of the Thomas-Smith family for the period 1833 to 1987. Folder one (undated and 19th century materials) and two (20th century materials) contain such items as newspaper clippings, photographs, notes, advertisements, receipts, articles, genealogies, deeds, correspondence, applications to various societies, a term paper regarding the Drew family of Duxbury, and a portion of a nomination form for the U.S. Dept. of the Interior, National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places Inventory for the Capt. Daniel Bradford House (Duxbury, Mass.). The last folder contains ticket stubs, receipts, post cards, etc. of William Fuller Fiske's European trip in the early 1910s.

Jane Briggs Smith (1834-1925), daughter of Capt. Joshua and Saba (Drew) Smith, was born in Hanson, Mass. During, and for a period after, the Civil War she taught former slaves at freedman's schools in Hilton Head, Port Royal, and Sumter, S.C., and in Washington, D.C. While in the South she met Friend Fuller ("Fuller") Fiske (1828-1906), of Webster, N.H., who was working as a volunteer civilian nurse during the Civil War. Book collector residing in Morristown, New Jersey; died 1977. In his early years as a collector Fiske purchased modern British and American first editions, but from about June 1945 he focused on English color-plate books. Capt. Joshua Smith (1793-1851) was the son of Capt. Joseph and Bathsheba (Torrey) Smith, of Pembroke (now Hanson), Mass. He married, in 1826, Saba Drew (1796-1877), the daughter of Clement and Judith (Briggs) Drew, of Kingston, Mass.
